Abstract
551,372. Purifying iron and iron alloys. WILLIAMS, J. H. V. June 12, 1941, Nos. 7449/41 and 7789/42. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] In the treatment of iron and iron alloys, to remove graphite kish and other impurities therefrom, the molten dron ore is poured into an open mould or container b, and a blowing head comprising a flat headed element c of iron or steel or fireclay provided with a central tube d and a valve e therein immersed in the iron, a current of air of an irregular pulsating character being forced into the molten iron ore. The irregular pulsating character of the air current is produced by air pockets which form round the end of the tube b beneath the head and are rapidly expelled when they reach the perimeter of the undercut portion h of the head or the vent f and the molten metal simultaneously with the expulsion of the air strikes the flat end of the head with violence and continues throughout the blowing period. High grade silicon cast iron may be produced by stirring, by the aid of the blowing head, a mixture of ferro-silicon and molten haematite iron. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification, 523,965.
