Abstract

551,288. Tractors. ALLIN, G. S. Nov. 17, 1941, No. 14746. [Classes 79 (i) and 79 (iii)] A wheeled unit for use in converting an endlesstrack tractor to a wheeled tractor comprises a swing- ing frame 20 adapted to be pivotally mounted on one end of a transverse axle 4 of the tractor after the track frames thereof have been removed, the frame extending along one side of the tractor to form a support for one end of the usual transverse equalizing spring 5, and road wheels 67, 41 being mounted one at each end of the frame. The frame 20 is formed at one end with a half ball-socket 14b bolted at 15 to the existing other half 14a for mounting on a ball 13 on the end of the axle 4. A bracket 21 is bolted at 32 to the frame 20 and carries a spindle 37 for the road wheel 41, this spindle being also secured to the frame 20 by a nut 44. A stay arm 22 is bolted at 45 to the bracket and swivels on the axle 4. The driving road wheel 67 is bolted at 65 to the hub 12 which normally carries the track driving-sprocket so that the wheel 67 is driven through the tractor steering clutch 17 and spur gears 18, 10. The front end of the bracket 21 is formed with a socket or bearing surface 50 to receive the end of a transverse spring 5 pivoted at its centre to the tractor frame 2. A guide roller 8, mounted on the tractor frame, engages a sector guide 46 on the bracket and prevents lateral play of the frame 20. The road wheel 41 is driven by chain gearing 70, 71 from the road wheel 67. The vehicle is steered by independently controlling the usual steering clutches 17, one on each side of the tractor. The road wheels are larger than the track sprockets they replace and the speed of the wheeled tractor is in consequence higher than that of the tracked vehicle.
