Abstract

551,183. Photo-mechanical printing-surfaces. CO-OPERATIVE WHOLESALE SOCIETY Ltd., and TILL, L. A. July 9, 1941, No. 8660. [Class 98 (ii)] [Also in Group XV] A process of producing a printing surface as by photoengraving from an original of the kind prepared by printing on a paper or like sheet a stipple of lines, dots &c. in invisible ink, making on the sheet a drawing of the matter to be reproduced, and treating the sheet with an agent which renders the stipple visible at the areas where. it is desired, is characterized in that the invisible ink stipple markings have additional markings of smaller area printed over them in a different invisible ink or in a resist medium in order to permit selection of intensity of stipple. The stipple markings may all be printed in invisible ink as shown for a single element at X, Y, Z, Fig. 4, the upper markings being progressively smaller and capable of removal in turn by application of solvent before the selected set is rendered visible; or each marking may comprise an area X printed in invisible ink protected with one or more different resist coatings Y, Z, e.g. collodion and gum, which may be washed off selectively so as to lay bare only certain areas of the invisible ink markings before treatment to render them visible. The expression invisible ink includes any ink which will not reproduce in the photo-engraving process. Examples of invisible inks, with the appropriate developers in brackets,' are : lead base paint (sodium sulphide), nut galls and calcined sulphate of iron (water), ferric sulphate (nut galls or potassium ferrocyanide), copper sulphate (potassium ferrocyanide), cobalt nitrate (oxalic acid), Fowler's solution (copper nitrate), and soda lye or sodium carbonate (phenolphthalein); the inks may be mixed with binders such as gum arabic, varnish, spirit, or. cellulose compounds; and the developers may be applied as with a brush, glass pen, or rubber rod, or may be put up in solid crayon form.
