Abstract

551,017. Hydraulic transmission of power: brakes. PRATT, J. H., MANLEY, G. E., and GIRLING, A. H. G. Aug. 21, 1941, No. 10665. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In a liquid pressure transmission system in which a master cylinder unit exerting a differential action transmits pressure to receiving units such as brakes, and in which air is prevented from entering the system by pressure engendered in the system on the return stroke of the master piston, the master piston 9 is associated with a stationary packing member 8 which seals the piston during an operative stroke but permits liquid to enter the system during the return stroke. The piston 9 is of cup-shape and is connected to a rod 10 moving in a guide 4c. The piston works in a chamber formed of a rear part 4b and front part 4a connected by pipes 6 to the receiving units. The rear part is connected to a reservoir 5 by a passage 4e and a valve 17 which opens by gravity to permit of a free flow outwards, but which closes to provide a restricted inlet on the return of the piston. To allow free communication between the pars 4a, 4b in the withdrawn position of the piston, the skirt of the piston is formed with notches 9a, or as shown in Fig. 3 the piston 9 is moved free of the seal 8a. In this modification liquid can flow to the cylinder 4a via a valve 18 and on the return of the piston a projection 9c on it operates a valve 19 to permit passage of liquid to the reservoir 5.
