550,569. Catalytic apparatus. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. July 18, 1941, Nos. 9123 and 9124. Convention dates, July 24, 1940, and May 9, 1941. [Class 1 (i)] A catalytic apparatus comprises an annular bed 52 of contact material surrounding a central space divided longitudinally into inlet and outlet zones I. O. In the illustrated embodiment the portion 53 separating these zones extends at one side through the catalyst bed, and the reactant fluid enters and leaves the bed by perforations 54 in the wall adjacent the partition so that it flows around the annulus. In another embodiment the partition does not extend through the catalyst and the inlet and outlet perforations are diametrically opposite. In another modification the central passage is divided by a number of radial partitions which extend almost to the outer circumference of the catalyst bed. The flow is from one sector of the central passage outwardly through the catalyst, around the partition into the next sector, and inwardly to the next sector of the central passage.
