Abstract
549,820. Distilling water; feed water boiler, supplying. MEURK, B. E., NOLAND, B H., and DELAHANTY, P. J. March 6, 1941, No. 3065. [Class 32] [Also in Group XIII] In steam raising and utilizing plant particularly for marine work of the kind described in Specification 549,821 in which make up feed and distilled water are obtained by evaporating sea or impure water by waste steam from the plant, the latent heat of the steam obtained from the sea water is conserved by passing the steam through a heat exchanger, in heat exchange with the condensate from the boiler, on its way to the hot well. The plant comprises a steam boiler 10, a prime mover 9 and other steam utilizing appliances 11, a condenser 12, a hot well 13 and a pump 14 returning feed water through a heater 15 to the boiler. Make up feed and distilled water are obtained by passing impure water preheated in the condenser 12 into an evaporator 17 in which it is distilled by heat exchange with exhaust steam from the appliances 11 passed through a coil 20. The improvement comprises condensing the steam thus formed and led off through line 19 in a heat exchanger 41 by heat exchange with condensate from the condenser 12 fed through a coil 42 and thence to the hot well 13. A vacuum is maintained in the heat exchanger 41 by means of a steam jet pump 45 the jet being operated by steam from the boiler 10. A vacuum is also maintained on the condenser 12 through the line 50, the jet discharging into the hot well 13. The coil 20 discharges into a separator 54 from which condensate is fed through line 55 and coil 42 to the hot well. The separator 54 and coil 20 are vented through lines 57, 58 to the line 19. In a modification a second steam jet pump is provided to create a vacuum in the heat exchanger 41 and is operated by exhaust steam from line 21 which then discharges into coil 20. The steam may also be condensed by direct discharge of condensate in a spray into the exchanger 41, Fig. 3. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 272,693, [Class 123 (ii)].
