548,930. Processing dolomite; production of magnesium oxide, calcium silicate, and carbon dioxide. AMERICAN ZINC, LEAD & SMELTING CO. Aug. 5, 1941, No. 9946. Convention date, Aug. 3, 1940. [Classes 1 (ii), 1 (iii)] Silica is added to powdered dolomite in an amount sufficient to convert substantially the whole of the calcium of the dolomite into silicate, the mixture is calcined at about 850‹ C. in an atmosphere of steam until calcium silicate and magnesium oxide are formed. The calcination may also be in ordinary atmosphere at 1000‹C. The ratio of silica to raw dolomite is preferably somewhat greater than 1.07 SiO 2 to 1 CaO. The silica may be quartz, diatomaceous earth, kieselguhr, tripole, or byproduct silicic acid.
