Abstract
548,820. Uniting by fusion. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 26, 1941, No. 15213. Convention date, Nov. 28, 1940. [Class 83 (iv)] An arc welding head has a pair of shafts at a fixed distance apart carrying electrode feed rolls one at least of which is expansible for controlling the diameter to suit different sizes of electrodes. Bare or lightly or heavily flux coated electrodes may be used. Two pairs of feed rolls 10, 11 are carried by shafts 12, 13 mounted in ball bearings 30 ... 33 in a gear box 14 secured to a housing 15, which is bolted to a housing 17 closed at its outer end by a plate 18. The shafts 12 carry gear wheels 28 driven by a pinion 27 on a shaft 23 rotated in bearings 24, 25 and driven by worm gear 21, 22 from an electric motor 20. The gears 28 mesh with gears 29 so as to drive the shafts 13. The rollers are made of elastic material such as rubber which is keyed at 37 to the shafts between plates 38, 39 which are provided with teeth 40 to ensure the securing of the rolls. The diameter of the rolls may be adjusted pneumatically or hydraulically or by screws 41 threaded into the ends of the shafts and operating on the plates 38, 39 through washers 42, 43. The gear box 14 and housing 17 are each filled with high temperature grease and the housing 17 is separated from housing 15 by packing 34. Leakage of lubricant between the housing 15 and gear box 14 is prevented by heavy grease in grooves 35 and packing 36. The welding head is provided with lugs so that it may be angularly adjusted on a hinge pin 44 secured to a support 49. The adjustment is effected by a hand-operated screw 46 mounted so that it may be swung slightly in an arm 45 secured by a clamp 50 to the pin 44 and engaging a nut 52 rotatably mounted in a bracket 53 secured to the housing 15. The elastic feed roll may be replaced by a roll consisting of a two-part pulley provided with a V- groove containing an elastic ring. Specification 520,047 is referred to.
