Abstract
548,298. Spring devices for motor - cycles. MINETT, D. C. April 9, 1941, No. 4707. [Class 136 (iii)] A shock-absorber for the front or back wheel comprises two primary cylinders 1 each containing a piston 3 carried on a rod 4 constituting or being joined to a prong of the fork (as shown, the front fork). The cylinders contain oil and communicate by pipes 9 with a cup 17 secured in the upper part of a secondary cylinder 8 containing a spring- supported piston 10. When the wheel meets a bump, the piston 3 rise and oil is forced into the cup 17 and thence into the cylinder 8 through a bleed vent 21 constituted by the lower end 19 of a valve 20 and the edges of an aperture in the cup. On rebound, the liquid leaving the cylinder 8 raises a ball valve 27 and passes via ports 30 to the cup and thence back to the cylinders 1. In the case of a back wheel, each cylinder is divided into an upper and a lower portion, an elongated piston 3 extending between the portions and having secured thereto a forked member which receives one end of the wheel spindle. The secondary cylinder 8 may be positioned other than as shown, e.g. on the forward part of the machine in the case of a front wheel or under the saddle in the case of a back wheel.
