Abstract

548,112. Artificial filaments &c. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. March 20, 1941, No. 3811. Convention date, March 20, 1940. [Class 2 (ii)] Artificial filaments are obtained by extruding a spinning solution downwards into an evaporative setting medium, permitting the extruded bundle of filaments to fall by its own weight through the evaporative medium, and removing the bundle continuously with its extrusion and without tension from beneath the point at which it is extruded. The filaments may be converted into staple fibres either continuously with the production of the filaments or as a separate operation. The filaments are of high extensibility, resiliency, and thermal insulating properties. The apparatus employed may comprise one or more spinning cells, each provided with one or more nozzles for the extrusion of a bundle of filaments. A conveyer band may be provided to receive the filaments which may be collected together in the form of a sliver. The process is applicable to the production of filaments or fibres of cellulose acetate or other cellulose ester or ether. As shown in Fig. 1, filaments 7 from nozzles 4 fall by their own weight down the length of cells 5, and are received on a belt 8 which runs along the bottom of the cells. The belt travels at a speed equal to or slightly less than the speed at which the filaments fall upon it. The filaments emerge from between idler roller 12 and belt 8 as a sliver and pass through rollers 13, 14 which have a slightly greater peripheral speed than that of belt 8 so that the filaments in the sliver are straightened. The sliver is fed into coiling can 16. As shown in Fig. 2, the sliver is passed directly to a cutter for converting the filaments into staple fibres. A blast of compressed air passing through the annular space 21 draws the sliver 15 through cone 19 and conveys the straightened filaments to the cutter 22, the blades 24 of which co-operate with a stationary blade 25.
