[Class 95] [Also in Group XVII] A plastic, slightly elastic composition of natural or synthetic indiarubber and bitumen is disposed in a groove 4, Fig. 1, in, the lid of a container to make sealing contact with the surface 7 of the mouth ring 3. The groove may be first coated with a film of resin, and the composition may be coated after application with a layer 6 of lacquer. The composition is applied by means of the device shown in Figs. 2 and 3 in which the lids are supported by their edges between a fixed rail c and a travelling conveyer band e. The edges are first dipped into liquid resin in a trough bh, then cooled in a tunnel f after which they receive the composition consisting of liquid bitumen and rubber solution in trough bg. Lacquer, if used, is applied in trough bl and the lids are dried in a second tunnel g after which they are heated to soften the composition by a heater h and dried in a third tunnel k and finally drop into a receiver m. The heating causes the bitumen to ooze out from the composition, filling the surface pores of the rubber or penetrating into the lacquer coating if provided. In a modification, formed rubber rings laid on films of resin disposed in the grooves are coated with bitumen contained in the trough bg, the process then continuing as before.
