[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Dec. 1, 1941.] [Class 31 (i)] A machine for cutting parallel slits in a fur comprises rows of sharppointed elements engaging the fur and a plurality of knives carried by an elongated member guided so that the knives move between the rows to cut the fur into parallel strips. A work support 35 has upstanding pins 34 arranged in rows parallel to a guide-bar 41 supporting a carrier 16 for closely spaced knives 1. A fur 26 is stretched over the pins by a device 93 having legs 92 carrying hooks 91 at their ends. The fur is then pressed down on the pins by a feltcovered board. A clamping bar 28 holds the further edge. The knives may comprise razor blades 1 provided with the usual pairs of holes 3 engaged over pins and clamped between front and back plates by pivoted clips 5, 6. Projections 12, 13 on the shanks of the knife-holders engage holes in the carrier 16, the assembly of knives, which may each be one eighth of an inch wide, being positioned against each other and clamped by a top plate secured by nuts 19. The knives are supported from the guide-bar by a slide 42 fitted with rollers 43. A worm driven by an electric motor may be used to drag the knives across the fur. In a modification, the knife shanks are in two parts hinged together, so that some may be turned up into inoperative position when wider strips of fur are required. The strips may be cut on the bias, the bar 41 being positioned diagonally. The board 35 is then correspondingly moved angularly. Saw-like blades may be substituted for the rows of pins 34. The knives may carry rollers for depressing the portion of the skin about to be cut.
