546,596. Crotonic acid betaine compounds. ROCHE PRODUCTS, Ltd., BERGEL, F., COHEN, A., and HINDLEY, N. C. Dec. 10, 1940, No. 17527. [Class 2 (iii)] Crotonic acid betaine compounds and quaternary ammonium compounds of similar constitution are prepared by the condensation of malonic acid with a quaternary ammonium salt of the general formula where R, R<SP>1</SP>, and R" are alkyl aryl; or aralkyl groups and X is halogen. The condensation is preferably carried out in the presence of a base such as pyridine. In examples (1) a reaction mixture comprising malonic acid, anhydrous pyridine and the hydrate of trimethylethylal-ammonium chloride is heated on the water bath, evaporated to dryness, and purified by. fractional precipitation to give crotonic acid betaine chloride. (2) Triethylethylalammonium chloride, malonic acid and dry pyridine are heated on a hot water bath and worked up as in example (1) and the product purified by formation of a reineckate to form γ-carboxyallyl-triethyl ammonium chloride. (3) Trimethyl-#-propional-ammonium chloride, malonic acid and dry 'pyridine are treated as in example (1) to produce #-carboxy-# γ-#- butenyltrimethyl ammonium chloride.
