[Class 39 (i)] Silver electrodes, in a discharge tube containing an active layer of alkaline oxide, are coated with a very thin layer (0.01 micron or less) of an oxide of beryllium, magnesium, aluminium, zirconium, thorium or silicon, whereby the formation of active layers on these electrodes is avoided. The active layer may be photo- or secondary-emissive, for example caesium-silveroxide, such as are employed in photo-cells, iconoscopes, multiplier tubes and picture transformers. Usually the electrodes are coatings on the envelope, to form focusing or screening members. The thin layer may be applied by volatilization from a heated tungsten spiral or by heating a layer of ethyl orthosilicate ester sprayed or smeared on the electrode, which when heated to 100‹ C. will decompose leaving a thin layer of silicon dioxide.
