Abstract

546,552. Reflecting mirrors. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and NORTH, J. D. July 20, 1938, No. 21487.. [Class 103 (ii)] [Also in Groups XX and XXI] A mirror affording a rear view to the pilot of an aircraft is mounted for rotation in elevation and azimuth by a transmission system controlled by a rear gunner or observer who directs his gun or sight on to a second aircraft or other object and, by transmitting a half-rate movement to the mirror, communicates his line of aim or sight to the pilot. In the form shown, a mirror 8, Fig. 3, universally mounted for view through a trough 12 by the pilot 14, is geared for elevational and azimuthal movement as shown in Fig. 4, the driven shafts 28, 25 being connected to drive shafts 41, 44 at the rear gun turret 7, Fig. 5, actuated when the gunner aims the gun 6 on the second aircraft. The gearing is designed to give a 2:1 transmission ratio. In a modification where the gun or sight is adapted for continuous rotation in azimuth, the transmission is made effective through a limited angle only by a suitably shaped cam on the azimuthal axis of the gun or sight.
