Abstract
546,288. Aircraft arrester gear. BLACKBURN AIRCRAFT, Ltd., THARRATT, R., and THIRSK, W. H. Dec. 30,1940, No. 18223. [Class 4 An arrester gear for aircraft comprises a telescopic arm pivoted rearwardly of the tail wheel so as to be capable of swinging from a stowed position against the fuselage to an operative position as well as laterally, the arm having a hook at its free end to engage wires stretched across the land deck. An arm 10 of hollow rectangular section is pivoted about a vertical pivot 3 fixed in a block pivoted about a transverse pivot 1 in a block 2 fixed beneath the fuselage. Sliding within the arm 10 is a cylindrical member 11 having a square head 30 fitting the interior of the arm 10 so as to prevent rotation of a hook 12 at the rear end of the member 11. Lateral swinging of the arm 10 is limited by rubber-faced stops 6 and resisted by a spring pressed roller 8 engaging an edge cam 9 fixed to the pivot 3. The member 11 is urged outwardly by a spring 36 until the head 30 encounters a buffer 4, but in the stowed position a pin 15 on the hook 12 is engaged by a forked member 13, Fig. 3, fixed to the fuselage, this fork carrying a catch lever 14 which also engages the pin 15. To release the arm, the lever 14 is moved by a cable 16, on arm 18 on the lever ensuring the disengagement of the pin 15 from the forked member 13. The pin 3 is connected to the piston rod of an oil damper 19 which allows the arm 10 to fall freely but resists return movement. The damper is supplied with oil from a reservoir 20 and the flow is controlled by a relief valve 21 as described in Specification 525,016. The arm 10 is enclosed by a streamline casing 37.
