Abstract

[Class 108 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In making automobiles from pressings of substantially the same contour in a range of sizes, any component is formed in two or more parts which may be united e.g. by welding along a line or lines located at a point or points adjacent which there is little change of contour, the parts being united directly for an automobile of the largest size, but being first trimmed off adjacent the meeting edges before uniting in the case of the smaller sizes. While two or more sets of dies are required for making a component, a separate set is not required for each size. The wind screen panel 10 may be formed from two pressings welded at 11 or four pressings welded at 11 and 12, the smallest sizes being formed by first trimming off at 11 and 12. The rear panel may be formed of two pressings welded on the line 16, Fig. 4, and the floor assembly from three parts 13, 14, 15, trimmed if required at the inner and front edges. The windscreen lower rail, front floor assembly and the rear parcel shelf may be similarly formed in two parts and the rear seat pan assembly in three parts. In making automobiles in which the chassis and body form a unitary structure each side member may be formed as two pressings welded about the middle of the chassis. Side panel pressings can be divided at the middle of the door openings. Specification 534,496 is referred to.
