[Class 137] [Also in Group XI] In a combined lighting and air conditioning device the lighting is effected by electric discharge lamps which are controlled by an inductance, resistance or capacitance constituting or forming part of a device for conditioning or circulating the air. The air is conditioned by heating, cooling, ozonizing or sterilizing, and for heating an electric, water, steam or gas radiator may be employed. For sterilizing, use is made of ultraviolet rays from the lamps. In Fig. 2, the lighting unit comprises three tubular gas discharge lamps 1, 2, 3 disposed below a reflector 4 above which is a casing 5 through which air is caused to circulate by a fan 10 from inlets in the upper wall through lowered outlets 6. Heaters 7 are disposed behind the louvres, and below deflector plates 8 is an ozone generator 9 energized by a transformer 91, the whole fitting being suspended from the ceiling by rods 12. The motor 11 driving the fan is a three-phase motor whose windings are used as lamp ballasts. Part of the air from the fan is heated and passes through the louvres, and part passes over the ozonizer and through openings in the lower part of the casing 5, providing a screen of relatively cool air between the lamps and the heated air above, so that the lamps are prevented from overheating. In Fig. 4, the device is built into a ceiling a, and a portion 14 of glass or other transparent material which may have a fluorescent coating is disposed below a casing 13 in which a fan 18 draws in air through louvres 15 and delivers it past a heater 17 to outlet louvres 15. The vapour discharge lamps 20 provide ultra-violet rays which sterilize a part of the air current.
