Abstract
545,975. Driving-gear. REBBECK, F. E. and BENTLEY, H. H. Dec. 24, 1940, No. 18125. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXXIII and XXXV] In a drive transmission between an I.C. engine or other prime mover and the shaft of a, ship's propeller or other member driven through reduction gearing, a non-slipping electromagnetic coupling comprising co-acting independent electromagnetic windings carried by driving and driven elements respectively is inserted between the engine shaft and the reduction gearing, whereby the driving and driven elements are rotated synchronously, but torsional vibrations of the driving shaft are damped out. In the arrangement shown the shaft of the propeller 4 is driven from an I.C. engine shaft 2 through reduction gearing 5, shaft 3 and an electromagnetic coupling comprising on the shaft 2 a disc 6 flanged at 7 and carrying internally projecting salient poles 8 and on the shaft 3 a rotor 11 having a corresponding number of salient poles 12 disposed within the ring of poles 8. The pole windings 9, 13 are energized from a common or separate sources of supply through slip rings 10, 14 and leads 15. The co-operating poles 8, 12 may be arranged in axial alignment instead of as shown, while thrust bearings may be incorporated to absorb axial thrusts.
