Abstract

545,354. Electric cables. BRITISH INSULATED CABLES, Ltd., and QUAYLE, J. C. Sept. 17, 1940, No. 14264. [Class 36] An air-space cable has a cord, tape or string spacing member in the form of an open helix and consisting of glass fibres pre-coated or preimpregnated with a suitable binder. Two such spacers may be arranged coaxially one about the other and be of different pitch or hand or both. The binder may be applied in a liquid or semi-liquid state by use of a solvent, by emulsifying or by use of plasticizers and/or heat, and may comprise polystyrene, polythene, polymerised isobutylene, thermo-setting resins of the Novolak type, cellulose triacetate or ethyl cellulose. In Fig. 1, the conductor 1 is surrounded by the spacer 2, about which is a tube 3 of polythene, braided glass fibres &c. and a conducting outer tube 4 of wire braid; the tube 3 may be omitted. In Fig. 3, two conductors 5, 6, are surrounded each by a spacer 7, 8, and tube 9, 10, and are formed into a flat cable by tube 11 and an outer wire braid tube 12; the tubes 9, 10, 11, may be of glass fibre braid or polythene.
