Abstract

545,225. Friction clutches. ANDERSON, A., and ANDERSON. BOYES & CO., Ltd. Jan. 6, 1941. No. 169. Divided out of 544,856. [Class 80 (ii)] A friction clutch which, upon overload, is intermittently engaged for short periods of time alternating with longer periods of time during which the clutch is disengaged, comprises friction plates splined to a driving shaft 1 alternating with friction plates splined to a driven gear 4. Cam plates 18, 19 rotatable with the members 1, 4 respectively have opposed pairs of cam projections 18a, 19a, which co-operate with balls 20 carried in a cage 21. The friction plates are engaged by pressure of springs 15 transmitted thereto through a thrust collar 13 and the parts 18, 18a, 20, 19a, 19. The engaging movement of the collar 13 is limited by the heads of screws 17. One pair of projections 18a, 19a, and the corresponding ball 20 are further from the axis of the shaft 1 than the other set. Upon overload the cam plates 18, 19 move angularly relatively to one another so that the balls 20 run off the projections 18a, 19a, and on to the opposed plane parts of the plates 18, 19. The clutch is thus disengaged until the same pair of projections 18a, 19a, again register with one another, whereupon the clutch is re-engaged. The clutch may be applied to the gearhead casing of a coal-cutting machine. Specification 544,856 is referred to.
