545,190. Enamels and glazes; glass manufacture. EVERY, C. E. (Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co.). Aug. 13, 1940, No. 12962. [Class 56] A composition which on smelting forms a relatively translucent frit from which a highly opaque enamel can be produced comprises a zirconium compound, a fluorine compound, and at least five per cent. of aluminium, Similar compositions may be used for producing glasses of various degrees of opacity. The content of zirconium should be 1-9 per cent. preferably the amount of aluminium should lie between 6- and 10-per cent., and of fluorine 3.5-15 per cent. The frits produced by smelting are translucent but the addition of a small amount of a zirconium compound in the mill cause the production of a dense opaque enamel on the ware. The zirconium compound used is preferably zircon. Aluminium hydrate may be used to supply the aluminium, but pyrophillite is preferred although sillimanite, andalusite, bauxite, kyanite, or china clay may be used. Cryolite, fluorspar, or sodium fluosilicate may be used to supply fluorine. The materials must be free from all but the smallest traces of iron, chromium, manganese, vanadium, nickel, and titanium when producing white enamels, but their presence may be permitted when producing coloured enamels. Other compounds, such as those of boron, silicon, calcium, sodium, &c., are included as usual in compounding the enamel. Compositions of a number of suitable batches are given in the Specification.
