Abstract

544,274. Superphosphate. PROCTER, J. T. Sept. 21, 1940, No. 14441. [Class 111] [Also in Group III] Granular superphosphate fertilizers comprising calcium superphosphate alone or mixed with other fertilizing materials are produced by applying sulphuric acid to ground phosphate rock (alone or mixed with other materials) while being agitated so as to utilize the initial moist condition produced by the addition of the acid to effect granulation at the same time as the reaction. The process is conveniently carried out in an apparatus such as shown in Fig. 1 in which the raw materials are fed into a rotating drum 5 provided with fins 8 and a pipe 9 for spraying sulphuric acid. The material is further granulated in the lower part of the drum not provided with fins and passes thence to a drying cylinder 17. Camactuated spring striker arms 13, Fig. 3, are provided to prevent sticking of the material to the walls of the drums. A mixed fertilizer may be produced by treating with acid a finely ground mixture containing potassium chloride, sulphate of ammonia, mineral phosphate, bone meal and gypsum.
