Abstract

543,638. Flying instruments, SHARMA, D. N. May 20, 1940, No. 14499/41. Divided out of 14953/39. [Class 40 (i)] The beam of a cathode-ray tube is under the joint control of the altimeter and either a radio-controlled distance meter or a time measuring device acting in conjunction with the airspeed indicator so that the position of the spot with relation to a line 18 marked on the fluorescent end of the. tube or an associated viewing screen indicates the position of the craft in relation to the correct landing path. Special fluorescent materials or coloured screens may be used so that the spot has a characteristic appearance according as the craft is correctly situated or too high or too low. A picture of the aerodrome and the surrounding country may be secured to the screen or such a picture may be shown on the screen by television signals operating on an additional cathode beam. Movable markers 12, 13 and associated lamps 8, 5 are set to positions corresponding to those of radio marker beacons of the aerodrome at which a landing is to be made and the lamps are in known manner controlled by such beacons. In a preferred arrangement, an additional fixed deflecting voltage or current is applied to the plates or coils controlled by the distance indicator or airspeed indicator automatically or manually when the craft crosses the aerodrome boundary to bring the spot to the right-hand end of a dotted line 14 on which it is subsequently kept if the plane is being correctly landed. The instruments may vary the deflecting currents or voltages of the tube by varying the amount of light falling on a photo-electric cell.
