Abstract

543,339. Internal shoe brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and CHOUINGS, L. C. Oct. 28, 1940, No. 15788. [Class 103 (i)] An internal shoe drum brake comprises a wedgeshaped shoe-spreading device 34 (which may form part of a parking brake) mounted on a fixed supporting plate 37 and in rolling engagement by its inclined surfaces 45, 46 with thrust members 35, 36, pivotally engaged with the shoe webs and provided with rollers 51, 52 running on the back plate 10. In the off position as shown the thrust members engage stop members 54 turned up from the supporting plate 37; tail-pieces on the thrust members engaging the back plate 10 may serve instead of stop members. Alternative spreading means comprise a hydraulic cylinder which has one end closed and a single piston acting upon the free end of one shoe, the other shoe having a free end pivoting on the closed end of the cylinder.
