543,235. Sewing-machines. FAIRWEATHER W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.). Oct. 25, 1940, No..15726. [Class 112] The position of the trimming cutters in relation to the line of stitching is manually variable during stitching. The upper and moving cutter 19 of an overedge sewing-machine is adjustably fixed on a head 17 slidable laterally against spring pressure on the head of the trimming lever 9. The lower cutter 24 is adjustably secured upon a carrier 26 pivoted upon a pin 29 and spring-pressed laterally to maintain contact between the two cutters. The lateral movement of the upper cutter 19, which is followed by the lower cutter swinging about the pivot 29, is produced by means of a lever 36 pivoted at 37 upon the trimming lever. The front end of the lever 36 engages a projection on the sliding head 17 and the rear end 43 is engaged by a cam surface 51 carried by a hand-lever 50. The lever 50 may be operated by a finger piece 50b and is held in its extreme positions by a spring plunger which enters one or other of holes 57. Or it may be operated by a treadle T and in that case the spring plunger is not used. The end 43 is eccentrically mounted in the lever 36 and can be turned by means of holes 49 to adjust its relation to the cam surface 51.
