[Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] In order to ensure that a specimen of a fabric or other non-rigid material is properly mounted in the grips of the testing machine and does not become deformed or damaged prior to the test, the specimen is secured in the grips while on a setting base which has means for accurately mounting and positioning the grip prior to the introduction of the specimen. Means may be provided in the base for visually indicating the setting of the grips and specimen in the base and the grips may be maintained a pre-determined distance apart, to avoid any collapse or deformation of the specimen prior to the test by a reasonable rigid member connecting the grips. As shown the lower halves 5a of the grips are positioned on the base 10 by interchangeable platens 18, 19 and the' fabric specimen 11, slightly tensioned by a weight 12, is secured between the parts 5, 5a of the grips; the base has transverse slots 10a which accommodate the pivoted claw 9 of the upper halves 5 of the grips. The lower halves of the grip have projecting pins 17 preferably of polygonal cross section, and before the grips and specimen are removed from the base, a rigid bar is engaged with the pins ; the grips are then mounted in the jaws of the testing machine and the bar removed. The central platen 19 and the base have a number of parallel slots 19a and an electric lamp in the base is controlled by a switch 20 to permit observation or examination of the grips and specimen.
