Abstract

542,389. Canal-ray tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and MOTZ, H. July 5, 1940, No. 11305. [Class 39 (i)] In apparatus utilizing an electron beam of high intensity and density, the effect of space charge is diminished by directing a beam of positive ions along the path of the electron beam in the opposite direction. The source of the ion beam may be a mass B of barium or barium compound, such as barium berylliate in a container C surrounded by a heater H. Wires W, of a material such as oxidised tungsten, are heated during the operation of the device and ionise the vapour from the mass B. The ions are concentrated by a focusing electrode system represented by Fl. Caesium may be used instead of barium. The invention is described as applied to apparatus of the velocity modulated type in which electrons from a source K are concentrated into a beam by a focusing electrode system FE, and pass successively through gaps G in toroidal resonators R, R1 back-coupled at L1.
