[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, March 30, 1940.] [Classes 39 (i), 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] [Also in Groups XXXVI and XXXIX] An apparatus for transforming an invisible image into a visible one comprises an exhausted vessel 1 containing thermo-couples 21, 31, 4<SP>1</SP> ... on which the invisible image is formed, condensers 7,5 - 8,5 - 9,5 ... connected to the individual thermo-couples for storing charges proportional to the local intensities of the image, spots of electron-emitting material 71, 81, 91 ... on these condensers adapted to be acted on by a beam of light or of electrons or ions flashed as a whole or scanned to cause emission from the spots to a grid 13 or to a fluorescent screen 14 to produce signals in the grid circuit for transference to an image reproducer or to produce an image directly visible on the screen 14. The invisible image may come on the thermo-couples in the form of infra-red rays of a wave length of about 2 to 10 microns, or in the form of electric micro waves, or in the form of supersonic mechanical waves. For electric micro waves, which are suitable for viewing objects through brick walls and the like, the thermo-couple circuit is preferably tuned to the micro wave for example by coiling one or both leads. For supersonic waves, which are suitable in water, the thermo-couples are surrounded with india rubber, fibrous material, pitch, or like material producing heat by absorption of the supersonic waves. The thermo-couples may comprise one joint or several joints in series between iron and constantan wire.
