Abstract

541,684. Air-speed indicators. SMITH & SONS (MOTOR ACCESSORIES), Ltd., S., and MOSS, E. B. May 3, 1940, No. 8001. [Class 69 (i)] A pneumatic pressure head for use on aircraft, and curved or straight according to its position, has a heating coil for heating the forward dynamic pressure chamber and extending rearwardly in a tubular extension thereof past the lateral openings leading to the static pressure chamber. A cylindrical casing 10 comprises a rear part 13 with static pressure openings 22, and an inner tubular part 19 enlarged forwardly and soldered to the part 13, a forward part 15, forming the dynamic pressure chamber, being slidable on said enlarged portion and having an apertured baffle 17. The heating element comprises a coil 40 within the parts 15, 19, and having its coils spaced evenly or unevenly. Drain holes 26, 27 are provided. The heating element may comprise an insulated conductor 23 and an insulated sheath 24 connected at their forward ends, or the pressure head may form the return conductor, or twin cables may be used, the whole being removable from the forward end of the head. The head is mounted in a rubber socket 28 supporting an insulator 29 with electrical &c. connections.
