Abstract

541,431. Slicing machines. B E R K E L & PARNALLS SLICING MACHINE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., and THOMAS, H. (Maatschappij van Berkels Patent N.V.). July 19, 1940, No. 11896. [Class 28 (ii)] In a machine having a substance carrier 14 of variable stroke, a struck element 16 on the machine base, and a striker element on the carrier, the elements interacting to limit the return ("pull") stroke of the carrier, the length of the stroke of the carrier is adjusted by adjusting one of the elements lengthwise of the stroke. Thus, in Figs. 1 and 3 the striker element is adjustable, comprising an outer sleeve 18A forming part of the carrier and an inner sleeve 18B which is the striker element. the sleeves surrounding and sliding on the carrier guide bar 15. The inner sleeve is locked in the desired position by the engagement of a spring (20A) pressed latch 20, pivotally mounted on the inner sleeve, with a toothed rack 19 on the outer sleeve. An operative connection is provided between the inner sleeve and the conveyer of a slice-stacking mechanism. In Fig. 5 a spring-plunger 28 in the outer sleeve 18A engages one of a series of holes or recesses 27 in the inner sleeve 18B, the invention being applied to a machine in which the substance-pusher is carried by a block 21 sliding on guides 22, 23 and pulled to the cutting plane by a spring 24; this embodiment may also be applied to a machine having a mechanical feed actuated by the carrier at the commencement of each slicing stroke. In Fig. 8 the struck element is adjustable, and assists in step-by-step feed across the carrier. The struck element comprises a lever 34 fulcrummed on a pin 35 supported by the machine base 10; the lever may be slid along the pin and locked thereto by the engagement of a spring plunger (or screwed pin) 37 with annular recesses 36 in the pin 35. As the carrier reaches the end of its return stroke a roller 31, co-acting with a cam portion 32 on the lever 34, raises a member 38 to raise an arm 40 which (via a one-way clutch not shown) imparts a rotational feed movement to a screw 30. When the machine (such as that of Specification 412,416) has a spring feed which is freed by locking mechanism at the end of each return stroke, the roller 39 is located on a lever which, when displaced by the cam 38, frees the spring feed. The lever 34 may be non- adjustable on the pin 10, and then co-operates with an extensible carrier bearing such as that of Figs. 1 and 3 or of Fig. 5. In another modification, the fixed stop 16 is replaced by an adjustable stop slidable along the carrier guide 15 and locked by a rack or gate. The stop 16 may have a resilient buffer. Specification 532,230 is referred to.
