Abstract

541,400. Starting oil engines. CHAPMAN, C. W., and PERKINS, Ltd., F. Dec. 17, 1940. No. 17797. [Class 7 (iii)] To facilitate starting a compression ignition engine, the air drawn through the induction pipe 12 is heated by means of a fuel spray 13 ignited by a device 17, which may be a wire heated by electricity, supplied by a battery 18 and switch 19, or a spark device with a coil and contact-breaker. The battery may also operate the starting-motor. 21. The fuel may be supplied from a tank 16 by a hand pump 15, and may be the normal fuel or some more ignitable fuel such as paraffin. Instead of a pump and sprayer, a carburetter device holding a limited quantity of fuel may be arranged so that the fuel is drawn in with the induction air and ignited by the heater.
