A machine in which measurements in two directions at an angle can be made comprises a carriage mounted on a base, the direction of movement of the carriage being controlled by an intermediate piece with two straight edges at the desired angle bearing against corresponding straight edges on the carriage and base respectively. Mounted, on the plane surface 2 of a base 1 are plates 3 which support large balls 5 supporting the carriage 6, and directly on the base 1 are three sets of balls 9 which support the intermediate piece 8 which is made of upper and lower plates secured together cross-wise. Mounted on the base 1 is a straight edge 10 against which through balls 7 bears the cross-piece 11 of the intermediate piece 8 pressed home by springs 13 on the base bearing against a bar 12 acting through balls 7 on the other edge of the crosspiece 11. An upper plate 14 forming part of the piece 8 is provided with working surfaces 15 at 90 degrees to the working surfaces on the crosspiece 11. Balls 15<SP>1</SP> are interposed between the surfaces 15 and the working surface 152 provided on a carriage plate 16 pivoted at 17 to the underside of the carriage and adjustable about the point 17 by a screw 18 mounted on the carriage 6 co-operating with a lever 19 pivoted to the carriage and engaging a pin 20 on the plate 16. The carriage plate 16 is kept in contact with the plate 14 by two levers 21, springs 22 and rollers 23 provided underneath the carriage 16, the rollers bearing against a bar 24 attached to the upper plate 14 of the piece 8. Screws 28 serve to clamp the plate 16 to the carriage 6 when adjusted. The movements of the carriage in directions at right angles are controlled by micrometers 25, 26 and the carriage 6 is provided with work holders 27.
