Abstract

540,978. Dyeing textiles. HEATON, J. S., and HOWIS, C. C. April 4, 1940, No. 6111. [Class 15 (ii)] Azo dyes, forming on the material; printing.- Stable preparations for use in the production of azo dyestuffs on the material to be dyed, by the action of steam alone and without the use of acid, are obtained by diazotizing aniline or an alkyl or alkoxy-substituted derivative thereof, re-acting the diazo compound with an aminomonocarboxylic acid of the benzene series, free from sulphonic acid or sulphonamide groups and having the amino group unsubstituted, and mixing the resulting diazoamino compound with a coupling component in presence of an amount of a fixed alkali sufficient to neutralize all the acid and hydroxyl groups present. Specified substituted anilines for use as diazo components are o-, m- and ptoluidines, o- and p-anisidines, p-phenetidine, 4-m-xylidine, p-xylidine and #-cumidine and specified amino-monocarboxylic acids for use as stabilizers are o-, m- and p-aminobenzoic and 3-amino-4-methylbenzoic acids. In examples, (1) an aqueous paste containing the sodium salt of the diazoamino compound from diazotized p-xylidine and o-aminobenzoic acid is mixed with di-(acetoacetyl)-tolidine and aqueous caustic soda and a neutral or weakly caustic thickener is added ; the resulting paste may be printed on a cellulosic fabric and developed to a yellow print by steaming ; (2) the coupling component in (1) is replaced by the anilide of 2 : 3-hydroxynaphthoic acid to obtain a scarlet print ; (3) the diazo component in (1) is replaced by #-cumidine to obtain a yellow print.
