[Classes 97 (i) and 98 (i)] A permanent visual record of the order of passage of moving objects, for example contestants in a race, across a reference line, in which the objects appear in linear spaced relation corresponding to the intervals of time between their respective crossings of the line, is produced by projecting optically the images of the objects as they respectively cross the line upon a light sensitive surface which is simultaneously moved in the same direction and at substantially the same speed as the images, the exposure area of the surface at any instant being confined to a narrow strip extending transversely to the direction of movement of the surface and including the projection of the reference line. The apparatus described for carrying out the method is that forming the subject of Specification 537,253, comprising a camera with means for running a film continuously behind a slit which limits the exposure area to a narrow strip. One edge of the slit lies on the optical axis of the objective, the camera being so set up that the image of the reference line coincides with this edge. The other edge of the slit is inclined to the first to limit the field of view to a narrow space bounded by parallel planes, one of which contains the reference line, so that the photographing of each object commences at the instant its foremost part arrives at the reference line.
