[Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group XX] A colour coupler for colour development, which may be incorporated in a silver salt emulsion or in the developer, has the general formula where R, is hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or aryl group, and Z is an oxime, semi-carbazone, or thiosemicarbazone group, or which is the sodium or other salt of one of these compounds. Examples given are 2-acetyl-1-naphthol oxime and 2-acetyl-1-naphthol semicarbazone. The colour coupler may also have the general formula where R 1 is hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or aryl group or which is the sodium or other salt of one of these compounds, such compounds being obtained by reduction of the first class of compounds. An example given is 2-x-aminoethyl-1-naphthol. The amino compounds may be converted into other colour couplers (a) by treatment with aldehydes to give Schiff bases which can in turn be reduced to secondary amines, or (b) by conversion into amides by carboxylic or sulphonic acids. The naphthalene nucleus may be further substituted.
