Abstract
540,540. Torsiometers. COCKBURNS, Ltd., RODGER, J., and GRANT, T. July 11, 1940, No. 11541. [Class 106 (ii)] Comprises two hydraulic pumps 1, 2 adapted to be driven from axially spaced actuators 1a, 2a on a torque-transmitting shaft 3 so as to experience change of phase of operation caused by the twist of the shaft and a piston valve 4 and torque-indicating instrument 10 actuated by the pumps. As shown, the actuators are constituted by cams and the pumps are of the diaphragm type. The pump chambers are connected by pipes 1b, 2b with the opposite ends of a cylinder 5 containing a piston valve 6 provided with a passage 7 adapted to register with a part 8 connected by a pipe 9 to the instrument 10. An oil reservoir 11 provided with non-return valves 14, 15 is connected by pipes 12, 13 to the pumps, and pipes 16, 17 connect with the pipes 1b, 2b and with pressure relief valves 18, 19. In a modification, cams may be equally spaced around the shaft at each actuation point and arranged in pairs of one at each actuation point to work pumps and indicators and give a plurality of readings.
