[Class 2 (iii)] N-vinylimides are made by re-acting acetylene with an imide in the liquid phase under pressure in the presence of a mercury salt as catalyst. The imides used as parent materials may be made by heating a dibasic acid or its anhydride with urea. As catalysts, mercuric phosphate, sulphate, chloride and methanedisulphonate are specified; they may be used in conjunction with boron trifluoride. The preparation of N-vinyl derivatives of succinimide, # -4-tetrahydrophthalimide (made by heating urea with the acid anhydride obtained by condensing butadiene with maleic anhydride), α-pentenylsuccinimide, #-methylglutarimide, glutarimide and phthalimide is described in examples. Other imides specified as parent materials are α-methyl- and α : #<SP>1</SP>-dimethylsuccinimide, adipimide, dihydrophthalimide, 5 : 6 : 7 : 8 -tetrahydronaphthalimide, methyl- and ethyl-phthalimide, and the imide of 2 : 3- naphthalic acid. Open chain imides, e.g. mono- and poly-imides may also be used. The products polymerize under the influence of heat, light or peroxide catalysts, and can be inter-polymerized with other vinyl derivatives such as vinyl acetate and methyl methacrylate. The polymers can be hydrolyzed to polyvinylamines.
