Abstract

539,014. Pipe couplings; valves. AVERY EQUIPMENT, Ltd. (Argus Motoren Ges.). May 15. 1940, No. 8707. [Class 99 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX] In a pipe coupling of the kind in which a valve in each coupling member is opened by the coupling operation and in which the valve members are in contact at the beginning of coupling to prevent the trapping of air, the valve members are movable into lateral recesses in the coupling members to leave a clear passage through the coupling. The coupling members 1, 2, Fig. 1 contain spring-urged tubular members 10 with end-plates 12 having openings closed by disc-valves 16. The valve is carried by an arm 19 pivoted at 20 and having a toothed sector engaging a rack 23 on a pillar 24 fixed in the coupling. The members 10 are pushed into the coupling members 1, 2 as the latter are drawn together by the nut 7, the valves being swung into the position shown in dotted lines. A sleeve 32 defines the flow of fluid through the coupling. In a second coupling, Fig. 2, the coupling members 42 abut and carry the hinged valves 63 which are operated by plungers 46 secured to sleeves 52, 60 which are moved together against the action of springs 50 by a screwed sleeve 56. In a third coupling, Fig. 3, the coupling members 81, 119 have inclined abutting surfaces 85 containing the valved apertures, and valves 88 hinged at 92 and provided with springs 104. The valves are opened by cams 100 engaging the hinge arms 102 and mounted on sleeves 98 secured to discs 114, 129 on the outside of the coupling members. The discs have lugs 115, 130 connected by a yoke which forms a lever to rotate the disc. A shoulder on lug 115 engages a shoulder 117 to lock the members together. A spring catch 147 on the disc 129 locks the discs in the coupled position. In a fourth coupling, Fig. 9 the coupling members 170, 185 have a through passage of elliptical cross-section and circular valve seats 172. Each tubular valve 191 has an external flat surface forming a closure member, and is adapted to pivot about the minor axis of the through passage. Each valve has a pivot pin 193 journalled in a plunger 206 which engages a plunger 212 carried by a ring 178 or 182. The rings are drawn together by a coupling-nut 180 first moving the valves from their seats and then rotating them by a fixed arm 199 engaging a pin on the valve till the bores of the tubular valves come into alignment. In a fifth coupling spherical valve members 254, Fig. 11, have closure faces 258 parallel with their bores which are aligned by rotating the valves by toothed sectors 249, and a pinion 248 on a disc 247 actuated by a yoked lever 245. The lever is mounted on one coupling member and engages a shoulder 270 on the other. The valves are pivoted in sleeves 256 which are actuated by cams during rotation to lift the valves from and return them to their seats. In a further modification having a valve arrangement similar to the fifth coupling the lever coupling is replaced by a bayonet-type coupling.
