Abstract
539,012. Universal joints. SALVETTI, D. A. May 14, 1940, No. 8634. [Class 80 (ii)] A constant velocity universal joint comprises a block 15 connected to one shaft member 12 by a journal pin 14 and carrying pivot pins 21 arranged at right angles to the pin 14. Pivoted on the pins 21 is a yoke 26 and shoes 32 the latter having a cylindrical bearing part guided in a cylindrical track formed in arms 38 attached to a member 36 on the other shaft 11. A rod 45 has spherical portions 46, 47, 48, engaging the parts 12, 26, and a spring-pressed socket 51 in the member 36 respectively. The action of the rod 45 on the yoke 26 ensures that the axis 2-2 of the pins 21 always bi-sects the angle between the connected shafts 10, 11. The outer surface of the arms 38 is spherical and carries an enclosing casing in two parts 55, 56, a co-operating casing portion 60 being urged by a spring 63 bearing against a flange 64 on the member 12. In a modification the guides for the shoes 34 are on detachable members carried in a housing attached to one of the shafts, the rod 45 engaging recesses in the pin 14 and in the block 15. In another modification the guides for the shoes 34 are in a ring-shaped member attached to one shaft and the inner end 46 of the rod 45 engages a cup member fitted into the journal pin 14.
