Abstract

538,773. Rotary shaft bearing. AKER, E. S. March 5, 1940, No. 4122. [Class 12 (i)] A bearing suited for use with water-submerged shafts such as boat propeller shafts comprises a non-rotatable bushing element 14, Figs. 2 and 3, driven into bearing block.13 and formed with internal and external open-ended circumferential grooves 16, 18 connected by openings 19, and a journal sleeve 21 of hard or soft vulcanized rubber secured at its ends to the shaft 11 by clamp rings 22. The rings 22 may be formed with flanges 25 abutting the bushing element 14 and provided with notches 26 opposite the grooves in the body to allow the passage of water. The journal sleeve may be provided with pockets or channels 27 to increase the water flow over the bearing surface. The journal sleeve and the bore of the element 14 may be tapered to allow of adjustment for wear. Alternatively the sleeve 21 may be cemented or vulcanized to the shaft 11 or to a metal sleeve driven on the shaft 11. The flow of water through the grooves may be increased by vaned impellers secured to the shaft adjacent the ends of the bearing. Fig. 8 shows. another construction in which the grooves 16<SP>1</SP>, 18<SP>1</SP> instead of being staggered are disposed radially and are connected by openings 19'. The sleeve 21 is vulcanized or cemented to a liner sleeve 33 having tapered split end portions secured by internally tapered lockrings to the shaft 11.
