Abstract
537,746. Making hollow-ware. FARRER, J. O. (Continental Can Co., Inc.). Jan. 8, 1940, No. 416. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] Blanks for the manufacture of can bodies with soldered side seams are produced from black plate by coating at least one face with non-metallic protective, except the edges to be formed into a side seam which are then coat ed with tin. Feed rollers 6 draw strip 5 over device 7, for coating both sides with varnish, enamel, or other protective coating that will not conduct electricity, and through an oven 11. The strip next passes through a pickling bath 12 and washing bath 13 to remove scale &c. from the edges, after which tin is electrolytically deposited at 14 followed by further washing at 20, after which it is either reeled or immediately cut up into blanks. Wider strips may have a central coating of tin at 31 and be separated longitudinally at 31 into two strips before cutting along the lines 32 to form the blanks. In a modification the blanks are cut up before plating and are traversed by carriers 35 on a conveyer 36 through the plating bath. The hooks to form the seam may be formed on the edges prior to plating. The strips may be lithographed on one side and lacquered or left bare on the other. The strip may be arched so that its edges pass through pickling and tinning baths after which it passes flat to the blank forming cutters, to body formers, and a soldering horn. Specification 494,862 is referred to.
