537,266. Winches. GYRAL GEARS, Ltd., and STONELY, D. R. Dec. 4, 1939, No. 31410. [Class 78 (v)] A winch is provided with means to prevent damage should the cable bind between the drum and its casing. A spring-controlled dog clutch 13, 14 has a handle 17 removably mounted on a boss on the part 15 and transmits motion to a hollow shaft 9 carrying an eccentric 8 on which is mounted a toothed wheel 7 held to perform a gyratory motion by a coupling 26, 27, 39. The wheel 7 engages the inside of a pinion 4 fixed to the drum 2, and when fouling of the cable takes place and the drum 2 is jammed, the shaft 25 carrying the slotted disc 39, which is normally stationary is forced to turn and gives audible indication of said turning by the play of a pawl 52 over a ratchet wheel 51 mounted on the shaft 25. The dog clutch 13, 15 also slips with excessive load. A pawl 31 bearing on a ratchet disposed around the clutch part 13 permits normal one-way rotation, and, at option, two-way rotation. The handle 17 is held on to the boss by a spring button 61 engaging a groove 62, and may be removed for storage in a socket 56 and on a stud 57. The winch may have feet 67 and a side abutment for mounting it on an aeroplane for loading bombs, and the handle 17 may then be replaced by a motor. The handle can be fitted also on to the shaft 25. A continuously operating spring brake 36 bears on the drum side, and a handoperated adjustable band brake 46 acts on the rim of the clutch part 13.
