Abstract
537,260. Liquid containers. LASCH, L., and HUGHES & CO., Ltd., F. A. Nov. 13, 1939, No. 29935. [Class 69 (i)] An aircraft fuel tank or other liquid container comprises a sheet-metal body and at least one sheet-metal end wall, the body or wall or both having integral flanges to form similar abutting surfaces which are secured together solely by natural or artificial rubber, synthetic resin or similar compound or composition. In Fig. 1, the end wall 6 has a flange 7 which has a push or loose fit into the end of the body 4 to which it is fixed by rubber-like material 8. In another form, the flange is formed on the body 4 while in a further form, both body and end wall have matching flanges at an angle, preferably of 45 degrees. The tank may be formed of magnesium or aluminium base alloy sheet and the process of bonding known as "Metalastik" may be used. The bonding medium may be vinyl resins, butadiene, chlorinated butadiene. isoprene, chloroprene, &c. and may be vulcanized or polymerized. The bonding medium may be applied as a solution, or in the unpolymerized condition may be applied as a ring. Bonding may be effected by heat and by pressure applied by dies, by clamped rings or segments or by rollers moved by hand or mechanically.
