[Class 40 (iv)] In distributer systems in which the impulses of the various messages are separated by silent intervals, distortion in a long line causes the impulses to tail off and interfere with succeeding impulses thereby introducing cross-talk. Another form of interference is due to resonance effects occurring at the cessation of an impulse. Such interference is obviated by blocking the transmission line at a repeater during intervals or by arranging that only voltages above a certain threshold value are repeated. One arrangement comprises a blocking valve with two control grids, one receiving the impulses and the other a wave form of impulse frequency which paralyses the valve during the intervals, or an alternating current wave of large amplitude may be applied to the other grid, the positive swing of which is limited by grid current flow. In another arrangement, voltages below a threshold value are blocked by a back-biassed valve.
