536,266. Magnesium chloride from sea water. OCEAN SALTS (PRODUCTS), Ltd., and ADAMS, B. A. Nov. 13, 1939, No. 29950. [Class 1 (iii)] Magnesium chloride is obtained from sea water by the following steps.-Magnesium hydroxide is precipitated by the addition of lime, calcined dolomite or sodium hydroxide, and is filtered off and dissolved by means of carbon di-oxide or sulphuric acid ; the solution is passed through a column of cation exchange material, e.g. organic exchange material, which is then washed to free it from alkali ions ; sea water or a solution of alkali chloride is passed through the exchange material to give a solution of magnesium chloride which may be concentrated &c.
