Abstract

536,072. Packeting match books. RAHE, S. E. Dec. 13, 1939, No. 32113. [Class 94 (i)] Relates to machines for making match books and consists in providing a machine with means for delivering a number of match books in a closely-associated series, means for gripping each book of the series individually, means for spreading the grippers laterally to space the books apart, and means for discharging the books into as many stacks as there are books in the series. The discharging-device reverses the position of successive books as they are fed to a stack and arranges all the books in a stack to face one direction. The books 20, Figs. 1 and 5, are delivered from the making-machine to a conveyer 21 on which they are held by clips 22, the conveyer moving step-by-step to bring a series of books into position for transfer. The projecting ends of the books are gripped by a set of jaws 42, and the jaws are then moved horizontally by a reciprocating carriage 55, and are also swung through a right angle by a shaft 41 which is journalled at its ends in the carriage 55. This movement brings the series of match books above the stacking mechanism, as shown in Fig. 6, and during this movement the grippers are separated in an horizontal direction. For this purpose, each gripper support, which is splined on the shaft 41, is connected to a lazy tongs 67, and the horizontal movement of the carriage 55 causes the lazy tongs to be expanded by cams 72 oscillating about vertical pivots 73. When the jaws arrive in the position shown in Fig. 6, they open and drop the books into receptacles 92, a hinged plate 113 guiding the books into the receptacle. Each receptacle 92, Fig. 8, has two contiguous fixed sides 94 and a pivoted side 106, and is pivoted at its centre on a pin 109. All the receptacles of the series are connected by links to a bar 98 which is reciprocated periodically to turn the receptacles through a right angle about the pin 109 between the delivery of successive match books. After each receptacle has received a book and has been rotated, plungers 134, Fig. 6, pass through openings 136 in the back of the receptacle and move the book broadside into a runway 137, Fig. 1, against a movable stop 138 to form a stack ready to be boxed. The turning of the receptacle through a right angle reverses successive books in a stack end for end.
