535,646. Optical testing apparatus. KODAK, Ltd. June 3, 1940, No. 9686. Convention date, Sept. 13, 1939. [Class 97 (i)] Apparatus for determining the departure from flatness of a reflecting surface comprises a cylindrical lens of low power located immediately in front of the surface, a light source directing a beam of light through the lens on to the surface, and a viewing screen situated at the focus of the beam reflected by the surface and passed back through the lens. The apparatus is also useful for determining the departure from parallelism of two reflecting surfaces such as the opposite faces of a sheet of glass. Preferably the light beam incident on the lens is collimated, and the central longitudinal strip of the lens is masked so that light passes only through the marginal zones. For identifying the causes of the effects observed on the screen, shutters may be provided to obscure either zone at will; or apertured masks may be located in the marginal paths, preferably masks with complementary apertures ; or colour screens, preferably of complementary colours may be similarly located. The viewing screen may carry a system of parallel lines for estimating the extent of said departures. The apparatus shown in Fig. 4 comprises a table 37 supporting a casing containing a lamp 11 and collimating lens 12 directing light on to a cylindrical lens 13 resting over an aperture in the base of the casing and provided with the aforementioned mask 18. The specimen 14 under test, resting on a wheeled carriage 39 on the table, reflects the light back through the lens 13 and thence to a reflector 15 whereby the rays are deflected horizontally to a viewing screen 16 provided with a system of horizontal lines. Hinged shutters 28 are provided for masking either of the marginal beams passing through the lens 13. The appearance presented by the astigmatic image of the source 11 formed on the viewing screen 16 when the reflecting surface or surfaces 14 exhibit various defects are discussed in the Specification.
