Abstract

535,533. Unwinding wire or thread. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 8, 1940, No. 6324. Convention date, April 7, 1939. [Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] Apparatus for indicating, audibly or visibly, when the supply of wire or thread on a spool is nearly exhausted comprises a spool having an aperture therein over which the wire or thread is wound and mounted on a rotatable hub member with means on the member for engaging the spool and a finger member radially slidable in guides secured to the hub member and positioned so as to pass through the aperture in the spool on removal of the wire or thread over the aperture, the finger member having an arm extending to one side of the spool and adapted to make sliding electrical contact with a fixed contact piece when the finger has passed through the aperture in the spool as the hub and spool are rotated and thus complete an electrical signal operating circuit. As shown the finger 19 is slidable in radial guides 20 carried by a disc 22 fixed to the spokes 14 of a rotatablymounted hub 13. The spool 11 is held on the spokes 14 by springs 15 and has an aperture 18 in its periphery through which the finger falls, or is pushed by a spring, when the coils 10 over the aperture are removed, an arm 21 on the finger then engaging a fixed insulated contact and closing a circuit through a relay which causes a lamp to be lit. A solenoid may also be included in the circuit to cause the stoppage of a flare feeding device e.g. that disclosed in Specification 212,412, [Class 117]. Specification 476,414 also is referred to.
