Abstract

534,814. Directive radio systems. TRASK, W. E. J. June 27, 1939, No. 18638. [Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XI] Apparatus for producing a parallel beam of light or other radiation such as infra-red rays or short wireless waves comprises a parabolic reflector 1 having a source of light 17 or other radiation at its focus 9, a lens 16 with focus at 9, a spherical reflector 18 having its centre at 9 and subtending the same angle at the focal point as the lens and a spherical annular reflector 19 having its centre of curvature at 9. The spherical annular reflector 19 and the lens 16 are carried by a mount 12 supported by struts 11 detachably secured to the rim of the parabolic reflector 1. The outer refracting face of the lens may be ellipsoidal and the inner face of the lens may be stepped. Instead of the reflector 18 being in front of the reflector 1, as shown, it may be positioned behind or formed integral with the reflector 1. Instead of the annular reflector 19 being arranged near the source of night it may be arranged near the periphery of the reflector 1. Alternatively the reflectors 18, 19 may be dispensed with and the lamp bulb 8 may be spherical and silvered internally behind the filament and may be provided with an annular silvered zone in front of the filament. By using ebonite lenses infra-red rays may be transmitted and by using quartz lenses the apparatus may be employed with ultra violet rays. For transmitting short wireless waves having a length of 18 centimetres, more or less, pitch may be used as a refractive agent.
